"Reclaim the streets !"
Originally from Basel, Bustart began his career in 1999, operating as a classic graffiti artist. Between 2005 and 2011 he gradually pursued his interest in street art, all the while developing his technique. In addition to classic letters and tags, he began to work with portraits, cartoons and stencils. In 2011 Bustart began mixing different styles and fusing comic characters with various “bodily structures” and shapes inspired by bodies.
In 2013, these attempts resulted in Bustart’s very personal style, a colourful and complex graffiti that hints at abstraction and cut ups, incorporating writing and figurative elements which nevertheless is based on recognisable comic characters.The artist calls this style, “Graffiti Pop”, and his increasingly complex and finished works incorporate brushes, markers and stencils alongside the classic weapon of the graffiti artist, the aerosol-can. Since 2015, Bustart has been concentrating exclusively on his art, gaining international success and recognition, whilst continually intriguing his audience by incorporating “hidden” themes and messages.
‘Waiting for Damian’ is a collaboration with graffiti artist DYR. Tracing a line between graffiti origins and contemporary street art, Bustart has evolved a style that transcends its roots, forming an immediately recognisable aesthetic. His blend of invented cartoon characters, pop-culture iconography, and clean, crisp lines of colour and text make an unmistakable mark on the streets of Berlin, and beyond. This makes for an impactful, arresting style that delights passers by with its playful composition and pop-culture references. Located just off Sophienstraße, a stone’s throw away from the Kino Central open-air cinema, the mural lies in an area of Mitte filled with street art.
