Caleb Screpnek

“The streets are ours.”

The Canadian artist Caleb Screpnek was born in 1990. He graduated with a Bachelors in Business Administration and specialized in Design. Armed with an eye for the essential and a taste for the absurd, Caleb Screpnek’s work illustrates both imagined and experienced moments. He has worked as a writer, stand-up comedian, and fine artist but now uses murals as a means of fusing all three into something beautiful.

All of Caleb’s work is rooted in a love for storytelling and distilling complex themes into beautiful, bold images. Caleb works primarily with bright colors and crisp lines to create playful recreations of everyday scenes. Starting with photorealistic private commissions more than ten years ago, Caleb soon realized that it wasn’t enough to create art for a living simply; his work had to be art with a lasting impact and open and accessible for all. Caleb’s subsequent introduction to street art focused on large works poking fun at local politics and injecting some playfulness onto bare walls. Caleb now works with governments and organizations worldwide to create custom murals that tell their stories. Caleb works primarily in public spaces on projects that all can enjoy, regardless of race, religion, or income.

Caleb Screpnek often seeks to distil the essence of a subject, focusing on its mood and attempting to bring a sense of clarity to a topic, through a use of street art techniques. All of Caleb’s work is rooted in a love for storytelling, and bright colours and crisp lines combine to create playful recreations of everyday scenes. Often his large works poke fun at politics. The shown artwork caricatures the image of the dictator Kim Jong Un, leader of North Korea. Few things are held more sacred than the polished image of a despotic ruler: given the predilection for revering the leader's image through propaganda campaigns. ‘Kitten Jong-Il’ breaks this spell by defacing Kim Jong Un’s famous portrait with the features of nature’s oldest dictator, the cat.
